About Opportunity Card Germany (Chancenkarte)

The opportunity card allows non-EU candidates to look for job opportunities in Germany. You need to collect enough points (at least 6 points) to be eligible to enter Germany for work purposes. Additionally, you must have supporting documents to become eligible for the Opportunity Card.

Germany Opportunity Card Requirements

Under the German Opportunity Card points system, you need to match your criteria with the requirements and accumulate at least 6 points. Some of the basic requirements for obtaining the German Opportunity Card include:

  • 2 years of vocational training
  • A university degree (equivalent to a German degree)

A recognized foreign educational qualification - 4 points
This criterion has a weightage of 4 points. You have to undergo the procedure of getting recognition of your foreign educational qualification. Compensatory measures will be required in the case of a regulated profession.

Qualification for skill-shortage (in-demand) occupation - 1 Point
If your skills or expertise falls under the "skill-shortage occupation" as listed by Germany, you will acquire 1 point. Skill shortage implies that a particular skill has a shortage in the German labour market. You can check the in-demand skills in Germany here.

Professional qualification and job experience- 2-3 points
You must have a valid proof of at least two years of working / professional experience in alignment with your qualifications within the last five years. This criterion has a weightage of two points.

Application with your spouse - 1 point
Applicants can earn an additional point by applying together with their spouse or registered partner for the same "opportunity card" in Germany. This point reflects a preference for couples or registered partners applying jointly, which may be seen as beneficial for settling into life in Germany.

Age Criteria - 1-2 points
To meet this criterion, applicants must generally be below the age of 40. Those under 35 years of age receive 2 points, as this is considered the most favourable age range. Applicants aged between 35 and 40 can still earn 1 point, though they are slightly less preferred.

Your relationship with Germany - 1 point
If you have been in Germany for at least six months legally in the last five years, this will grant you one point. The reason for stay might include for study, work, investment or language training. Visits to Germany for tourism purposes are excluded.

German language skills of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)- 1-4 points
The weightage of this criteria depends on proficiency of your German language skills. You will acquire one point at A2 level of German language proficiency and two points at language level B1. Three points will be acquired for level B2 and above. Additional points can be obtained for English language skills or native German speaker level i.e. C1 level.
