Germany Launches ‘Opportunity Card’: Employment Opportunities for Skilled Migrants

Germany has introduced an exciting new initiative called the Opportunity Card, or Chancenkarte, starting June 1, 2024.

This innovative visa program is designed to attract skilled migrants from non-EU countries to help fill the country’s labor shortages in critical sectors like healthcare, IT, and engineering.
Let’s dig into what this Opportunity Card is all about and how it can shape your career journey.

What’s the Opportunity Card?

The Opportunity Card is like a golden ticket for skilled migrants dreaming of a career in Germany. It’s a special visa that allows folks from non-EU countries to live in Germany for up to a year while they hunt for a job.

Unlike regular visas that demand a job offer upfront, this card lets you explore work options in Germany firsthand.

Fortunately, if you secure qualified employment during your stay, you may obtain a residence permit to continue working in Germany.

“Germany’s Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) has announced that up to 25,000 individuals annually will gain entry through this avenue. Anticipating growth, the agency aims to increase this quota to 50,000 in the following year.”

Besides all this, while seeking employment, you can opt for part-time work for a maximum of 20 hours per week.

Additionally, you have the option to test out different job roles for up to two weeks each, allowing you to acquaint yourself with various types of work.

How Does the Point System Work?

The Germany Opportunity Card application process operates on a points-based system, ensuring that only qualified individuals are eligible. This system looks at things like your education, work experience, language skills, age, and various other factors.

Note* To qualify for acquiring the Opportunity Card, applicants must attain a minimum score of 6 points.

Let’s Break Down the Points System:

You can calculate your points for the Germany Opportunity Card and determine your eligibility by considering this point system.

#1 Education and Work Experience: Got diplomas or work experience? You’re in luck! The more years you’ve worked or the better your qualifications, the more points you get.

  • 4 Points: Diplomas and qualifications partly recognized by Germany.
  • 3 Points: At least 5 years of work experience in the past 7 years in the relevant field.
  • 2 Points: 2 years of work experience in the past 5 years.
  • 1 Point: Vocational training in Germany’s bottleneck professions like healthcare, IT, and engineering.

#2 Shortage Occupations:

  • 1 Point: Qualification in designated shortage occupations, including management roles, STEM professions, healthcare, education, and more…

#3 Language Skills: Habla Deutsch? Parlez-vous anglais? If you speak German or English like a champ, you’re on the right track. The better your language skills, the more points you bag.

  • 3 Points: German language proficiency at B2 level or above.
  • 2 Points: German language proficiency at B1 level.
  • 1 Point: German language proficiency at A1-A2 level.
  • 1 Additional Point: Fluent English (C1 level or above).

#4 Age: Age is just a number, right? Well, not quite. If you’re under 35, you score higher on the points scale. But don’t worry if you’re a bit older; you still get some points if you’re between 35 and 40.

  • 2 Points: Applicants under 35 years old.
  • 1 Point: Applicants between 35 and 40 years old.

#5 Ties to Germany: Ever spent time in Germany before? Maybe you did a study abroad or a short stint working there. That counts! The more time you’ve spent in Germany, the more points you earn.

  • 1 Point: Previous stays in Germany for at least 6 months in the past 5 years.

#6 Additional

  • 1 Point: If the applicant’s spouse is also eligible and applies for the Opportunity Card in Germany.

How to Get Your Hands on an Opportunity Card

Getting the Opportunity Card isn’t rocket science. If you meet the requirements and have enough points, you can apply online if you’re from certain countries. Otherwise, swing by your local German embassy or consulate.

The application fee is €75, and you’re good to go. Oh, and don’t forget to show you’ve got enough cash to support yourself while you’re in Germany.

Requirements and Application Details

To apply for the Opportunity Card Germany, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of at least two years of vocational training or a university degree.
  • Proficiency in either German (A1) or English (B2).
